A good first step towards cooking with fire
The Karu 2 deserves consideration if you want to learn to manage wood or charcoal without moving to a huge oven. It accepts a pizza of around 30 cm, weighs 15.3 kg and can take a propane burner sold separately. You will still encounter its former name, Karu 12G, in some content.
This is not the carefree choice. You must feed the fire, monitor the baking stone and accept that two evenings will not follow exactly the same rhythm. If that ritual appeals to you, it is part of the enjoyment. If you mostly want to start a bake quickly, the Koda 2 is more logical.
Leave space around the oven
The stone is 15 mm thick and the published weight is 15.3 kg. The chimney and fuel-loading area also take space around the oven body. The published dimensions additionally contain a duplicated label. Do not buy the table to the nearest centimetre.
Ooni claims 450°C in 15 minutes, a maximum of 500°C and a pizza in 60 seconds. Those figures specify neither the mass of wood, the wind, nor where the stone temperature is read. Keep them as manufacturer reference points.
Do not look for one universal timer
One mild-weather session reaches around 510°C on the oven floor, meaning the surface of the stone, with readings every five minutes. Two pizzas bake in 75 and 82 seconds, but the doughs and launch temperatures differ. Another wood-fired session reads around 350°C after 40 minutes, without weighing the fuel.
The gap is large without being contradictory. Conditions, wood, air and instruments change. The Karu 2 can reach the heat sought for Neapolitan pizza. It does not therefore have a universal heating time that can be copied onto a timer.
A New York-style pizza sequence also shows that launching too hot can cause problems. Maximum temperature is not always the right target. You need to align the heat of the stone, the flame and the dough style.
Wood gives the Karu 2 its purpose
Wood requires the most intervention and brings the greatest variation. Charcoal can help maintain a more stable heat base without removing the need to watch it. Propane simplifies control, but you must buy a separate burner and convert the oven.
In our view, wood is the right reason to buy this model. Gas is a useful fallback. If you already know it will be your main fuel, choose an oven built around gas instead of stacking accessories.
The right profile
The Karu 2 suits someone curious, patient and willing to take a few notes at first. It remains compact enough for a domestic setup and opens a genuine door to cooking with fire.
Rule it out for indoor use, a terrace where smoke is a problem, or regular service of many pizzas. The Karu 2 Pro offers more space, but its weight and price change the project completely.
Check before purchase
- Clearances around the chimney and the direction of the wind.
- Dry storage for wood and charcoal.
- The price of the propane burner and compatibility of its connection.
- The pizza size that is genuinely comfortable to turn.
- How much time you accept spending on the fire and cleaning.
What the sources cannot establish
The available measurements do not follow the same protocol. They provide neither consumption, the number of pizzas the oven can bake in succession, nor a demonstrated benefit in flavour.
The conclusion is simple. The Karu 2 is coherent for learning fire-based cooking, but the sources do not support calling it faster or better than another oven under identical conditions.
