An oven to install, not take out of a cupboard
The Karu 2 Pro is not simply a widened Karu 2. At 28.4 kg, with a 40 cm pizza opening, glass door and display, it needs a lasting position. It makes sense if you want to cook with wood often while retaining the option to switch to gas. For occasional outings, its mass and complexity are hard to justify.
The propane burner is sold separately. A bundle may group it with the oven, but that does not create a different model. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing prices.
A 43 cm stone and nearly 30 kg
The published cooking surface is 43 cm wide. The oven measures 50 × 83 × 83 cm, weighs 28.4 kg and uses a 15 mm stone. It adds a glass door, display and food probe.
Ooni claims 500°C in 15 minutes and a wood-fired pizza in 60 seconds. Only one video documents heating, and it uses gas rather than wood. These figures are therefore not enough to establish a schedule that will apply at home.
Changing fuel is not instantaneous
The observed conversion involves loosening two screws, removing the burner and replacing the rear panel. The process looks accessible, but you will not switch from gas to wood in the middle of a bake. Wait for the oven to cool before handling the parts.
The integrated thermometer measures the air in the oven. To know the stone temperature, you still need an infrared thermometer. An impressive display reading does not guarantee that the cooking surface is ready at its centre and edges.
In this session, 30 to 40 minutes
In the available session, full temperature arrives after around 30 to 40 minutes. The stone starts at about 7°C and the gas remains at full power. This result does not refute the fifteen-minute claim because the exact target, climate and measurement point are not aligned.
After launching, the cook turns the flame down and then raises it to colour the top. In this session, the New York-style pizzas require several rotations. This movement tells us more about the oven than an isolated time. Even with plenty of space, the heat of the stone and the heat of the flame still need to be managed separately.
Who it suits
The Karu 2 Pro suits a lasting outdoor installation on a solid table for someone who genuinely wants to use wood, charcoal and gas. The 40 cm opening also leaves more room to turn a small pizza or use a compatible dish.
Rule it out if you must store the oven after every use. At nearly 30 kg, its portability becomes theoretical. The Karu 2 remains more coherent if you want a simple format. If you mainly cook with gas, the Koda 2 Pro avoids the parts associated with solid fuel.
Check before purchase
- The depth and load capacity of the table.
- Clearances around the chimney and door.
- Total cost with gas burner, peel, cover and infrared thermometer.
- The main fuel you will actually use.
- Space to clean and store the conversion parts.
What remains to be checked
One video is not enough to measure performance or ease of learning. Wood-fired preheating is notably absent.
We can therefore assess the footprint, conversion and observed techniques, but not rank the Karu 2 Pro against gas ovens. Before buying, answer two practical questions above all: do you have a fixed position, and will you genuinely cook with fire often enough to justify this large format?
