Choose the location before the model
For indoor baking, the Volt 2 is the documented choice in the current range. Outdoors, Koda suits someone who wants direct propane control. Karu accepts wood and charcoal, with a propane burner sold separately for the documented models.
The real choice therefore concerns your everyday constraints. Are you allowed to use the oven in the planned location? Do you want to turn a dial, plug in an appliance or watch a fire? An ill-suited energy source will quickly make you forget the oven’s qualities.
Nothing in the available sources supports a claim that one of these energy sources produces better flavour or performance. Once this first sorting is done, the Which Ooni oven should you choose in 2026? guide compares stated diameters, weights and capacities. The Four à Nu method then explains how the sources were brought together.
Buyer discussions often return to the same uncertainties: Koda, Karu or pellets, wood or gas, then Koda 2 or Karu 2. These questions shape the page. They prove no performance difference.
Gas, wood or electricity: the simplest sorting
| Family | Stated energy | Stated location | Described control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koda | Propane | Outdoor use explicitly recorded for Koda 2 and Koda 2 Pro | Gas dial |
| Karu | Wood and charcoal, propane with accessory | Confirm in the manual for the model | Fire management or separate gas burner |
| Volt 2 | Electricity, 220 to 240 V and 1,600 W | Indoors | Electric programmes and settings |
The manufacturer’s collection gives the composition of the range. Ooni presents the Koda 2 and Koda 2 Pro as outdoor propane ovens. Check the manual before extending that statement to other Koda models.
The Karu 2 and Karu 2 Pro accept wood and charcoal. Their propane burner is sold separately. The Volt 2 is an indoor electric oven with a stated range from 20 to 450°C.
This information is enough to rule out a family that is incompatible with your location or fuel. It says nothing certain about ease of use, the cost of a session or consistency of bakes.
Gas starts faster in one comparison
A Barbecue Way Of Life comparison between a gas Koda 16 and a Branner wood oven shows gas starting faster in that session, then states that their floor temperatures become close later (at 4 min 03 sec and at 6 min 10 sec). The moments are not standardised, and only one example of each oven is used. The presenters say that they perceive no flavour difference (at 9 min 49 sec), but the tasting is neither blind nor repeated. This passage therefore does not prove flavour equivalence between wood and gas.
The Volt 2 relies on settings, not a fire to manage
On the Volt 2, Got2EatPizza shows Neapolitan, New York and pan-pizza presets, then manual operation (at 2 min 54 sec). She also uses an infrared thermometer and shows bakes with few rotations (at 4 min 17 sec). The source uses affiliate links and does not specify the origin of its unit. No measurement of uniformity is available in this video.
Boulangerie Pas à pas, in collaboration with Ooni and using merchant links, reads around 315°C on the floor after twenty minutes when the oven is initially set to 270°C (at 2 min 16 sec). The setting, display, floor and ceiling are different measurements. This isolated reading does not define the Volt 2’s accuracy.
Checks to perform at home
- permission and required clearances at the real location;
- a gas connection and regulator suitable for France;
- the time spent lighting, watching and cleaning up after wood;
- consumption per session against a common temperature target;
- floor recovery between several pizzas;
- the effect of wind on outdoor ovens;
- repairability and the cost of an electrical or gas-component failure.
What this comparison does not settle
No source in the register compares a Koda, Karu and Volt 2 using the same dough, instruments, ambient temperature and several repetitions. The recorded flavour preferences remain personal.
Use this page to choose a location, energy source and the movements you accept. It cannot rank the performance of the three energy sources.
